More Holiday Home Security Tips from SECUR-U

More Holiday Home Security Tips from SECUR-U

It’s now December and the holiday season is in full swing! Last month we shared some great ideas on keeping you and your home secured and safe over the holiday season. In the spirit of this season of giving, I want to give you some more, great holiday security tips from some of my favourite holiday movies!

It’s a bit extreme to make up cardboard cut outs and put them on a moving track, while cranking festive songs, but Kevin McCallister had the right idea. Make it look like somebody is home. Lights on a timer is a great way to give the impression that somebody is home. There are even some timer systems that integrate with your home alarm system and can be programmed to randomly come on between certain time frames.

Other signs that Humbugs are looking for are the unshoveled driveway, over flowing mailboxes, newspapers and flyers on the front steps for multiple days. If you’re going to be away, leave a spare key with a friend or neighbour to check in on the house daily, or hire a house sitter to pick up mail and flyers and at the very least leave tire tracks and foot prints in your driveway.

Don’t advertise. Charlie Brown is right, the holiday season has become too commercial! Try not to advertise your possessions too. If you must put your tree in the front window of your home, try to keep the piles of presents away from the window as long as possible. Once the gifts are opened, break down the well branded boxes and bundle them so that you cannot see what they once contained (this will limit your curbside advertising on garbage day).

If video surveillance isn’t part of your home’s exterior decorating (be it year round or for the holidays) look into motion sensitive flood lighting. People are less likely to stick around if somebody can see them trying to break in. The only person who should be able to approach your home stealthily will be landing on the roof, not coming up your driveway.

We at SECUR-U hope all Miltonians have a SAFE and HAPPY Holiday season shared with friends and family!

Residential Video Surveillance

Residential Video Surveillance

I am proudly a fourth generation Miltonian. When I first ventured into the security business my grandparents thought I was crazy. ‘Why would anyone in Milton ever need a security system?’ A lot has changed in the 18 years that I have been a business owner in Milton. Just look around, the growth although amazing, has changed the ‘small’ town of Milton that my grandparents knew. They would be speechless to know that I am writing an article that video surveillance is becoming a necessary fixture in home security.

There are a variety of reasons that a homeowner would consider investing in video surveillance. Here are some of my reasons for having video around my home: My wife likes to be able to see who is at the door before opening. I can pull up video footage to see if someone was in my yard while I was not home. I am able to confirm that my kids got home from school safely even while I’m travelling. I like the comfort of knowing that my family is safe and at any time, I can log on to my DVR and see what is happening real-time… and the list goes on.

Keeping up with today’s technology is not easy but here is a quick summary of the everyday camera system that SECUR-U would install into a home. For starters, choosing the size of digital video recorder (DVR) is most important so that your overall needs can be met. DVR’s are sold in four, eight and sixteen camera inputs and you can add one camera at a time. Recorders can be purchased in both a computer based configuration or a stand-alone model similar to your cable TV box which is our most popular selling item for homeowners. Digital video recorders capture an image based on pixel or image change and store the video image onto a hard drive that can be played back within a specified period, the variables are based on the rate of motion, the hard drive capacity and the size of the compressed image. MPEG4 compression has been the compression leader for many years and is now being replaced with H.264 a compression which makes a significant difference to the storage capacity.

Here is the cool part, our more recent recorders also provide remote viewing on your iPhone, Android or Blackberry Smartphone or you can view your home remotely with a computer while at work, home or play.

As for camera options, our best seller is a rugged dome camera that can handle the outdoor elements and provides a color image during the day and automatically converts to black and white at night with infrared illumination to assist with image clarity in darker environments. These cameras can be purchased in a fixed view wide angle or adjustable view lens to suit your needs. Depending on the specific camera location our knowledgeable staff can offer a wide variety of camera products to suit every need and location.

When it comes to installation, I would highly recommend consulting a professional as the camera location and the methods used by our trained staff will make your installation seamless, tidy and professional. The town is changing. Security is changing. Don’t let other companies use scare tactics to sell you on to security or surveillance. Gordon Food Service is a well known food service provider with distribution centres across Canada. Our customers demand the very best service in quality, delivery and especially, safety. They need to know that the products delivered to their sites have been handled with the utmost care.

To ensure we delivered on our promise to meet our customer’s requirements, it was critical to put into place, an effective and positive “Food Defence Program”. SECURU helped us to achieve our goals.

We were able to put into place a video surveillance system to monitor  interior and exterior movement and record as necessary. It has been successful in determining and resolving many issues, which had previously gone unchecked and unquestioned.

They were also instrumental in proposing, installing and maintaining our access control system. With over 600 employees, we can now manage access through key and critical portions of the office, warehouse and transportation while simultaneously, monitor, track and record traffic. This allowed us to review and adjust when necessary, our Food Defence Protocol and Procedures.

When considering the level of security now in place, it was important to ensure the service provider could back up these systems with the appropriate response time and knowledgeable technicians. They have not disappointed but in fact, have exceeded our expectations. In fact, our previous service provider, larger and well known in the industry, did not meet our requirements or provide the level of service we have come to receive from Secur-U.

I would recommend this organization to any company looking for that personal and detailed security systems and support.

As your local leader in Security Solutions SECUR-U wants to keep you informed regarding important security issues in our community.

The Halton Regional Police is reporting an increase of Overnight Residential Break and Enters; they have recently reported the following:

June 8, 2010 From: Councillor Allan Elgar Ward 4

Residents being warned to close and lock their garage doors!!!!

There have been several incidents of culprits entering unlocked homes and garages during the overnight hours and removing valuables. Cameras, laptop computers, GPS systems and purses are being stolen from unlocked vehicles inside the garage. All residents are being warned to take the following precautions to prevent being the victim of this type of crime.

* Close and lock all garage doors, ground floor doors and windows before going to bed at night

* Do not leave spare keys to the house in your vehicle

* Keep your vehicles locked at all times

* If you have a garage, park your cars in the garage

* If your home has an alarm, activate the alarm system before going to bed

* If you are away on vacation, have a family member or friend check on your home regularly

These are crimes of opportunity, remove the opportunity, and you may remove the crime.

Wireless Home Security Alarms for New Homes

Posted by: Doug Penson Posted Date: 06/07/2010

Home security alarms are devices that will be installed to prevent theft, burglary, and break-ins and also to avert any possible damage due to fire or harmful gases. These alarms are triggered whenever they sense any of these conditions in your home.

In recent years home security alarm systems have proved to be one of the most effective ways to protect your house and loved ones. Wired security alarms, wireless security alarms and hybrid security alarms are the three basic types of home security systems. For homes with a dry walled finished basement ceiling which limits the accessibility to run cable, a wireless home security alarm would be the best solution. Wireless home security alarms allow our clients to install wireless window/door transmitters that will protect the perimeter of the home and wireless motion detection to cover the interior without the need to remove millwork to prevent the possibility of damage occurring. SECUR-U sells wireless security packages that can be tailored to protect your needs.

To understand the basic operation of our system and how wireless works is very similar to how a cordless phone operates. With security in mind, the wireless window/door transmitter communicates to a receiving unit located inside your home that is programmed to identify the serial number of the protection device which we refer to as a zone. Other wireless devices located in or around your property may communicate with a different wireless frequency that will not compromise your security or create false alarm conditions. Each wireless device has a battery and the control panel monitors the battery condition to ensure effective operation. Once a low battery is detected you will be notified with a trouble condition on your keypad prior to failure.

Wireless home security alarms are preferred by many home owners for one reason. If you decide to move to a new home, these security alarms can be easily removed and re-installed into your new property. For added safety and security additional features like video surveillance, intercom systems and medical systems can be incorporated into your home. Wireless home security alarms have become imperative to protect your house from intruders and other threats like fire and flood.

Loss of time and inventory is a potential threat that almost all business owners face. Video surveillance and access control are two important features added to your alarm monitoring system that prevent the additional expense of having to replace stolen inventory

Let's face the facts, cameras don't lie and they work 24/7 to protect you and your facility from theft, damage and liability issues that business owners potentially face.  Let's take one camera as an expample that will view your time clock, if this camera had a value of $500.00 and your average employee made $15.00 per hour and you had ten employees and you lost on avarage 1/2 hour per day per employee your return on investment would be just over 6 days. (that's reality).

Security System Installation Question?

Security System Installation Question?

Potential SECUR-U Security System Client Question:

Hello, I recently moved to Hamilton and am interested in an alarm system. You came highly recommend by our State Farm and Mortgage Architects in Milton. I am looking to cover at least 6 windows and 2 doors and possible video surveillance. However my only concern is after living here for a couple months we have realized that the area is not the greatest and are not looking to stay for very long most likely a year, maximum two years. Do you have any monthly programs for those lengths of times?

How much would I be looking at spending with this reduced amount of time on a contract? We will be keeping it as a rental unit however so there is a possibility of future tenants wanting to continue with the service, would that be possible? Thank you, Michelle

SECUR-U Reply:

Michelle,

To answer your question around short term monitoring we can sell you a system based on time and material but in the long run if you are planning to stay were you are for two years and potentially rent out your existing home I would certainly recommend going with one of our three year packages which are either wireless or hardwired depending on accessibility to run wire in your home.   If you decide to move at year two, you can transfer the monitoring agreement to the new owner and your real estate agent can make it apart of the purchase and sale agreement.  If the new owner does not agree to transfer the monitoring then you can move the system to your next home or payout the remaining term of the agreement outstanding which is typically a lot less then paying the time and material cost upfront for the original installation.

I am happy to visit you at your home to provide pricing and a tailored system including cameras if required to suit your requirements.

Our team at SECUR-U look forward to working with you.

Why Lease your Video Surveillance System

Posted by: Doug Penson Posted Date: 07/03/2009

SECUR-U provides the opportunity to lease your new video surveillance system, access control system, alarm system or intercom systems.

A common questions is why should I lease rather than purchase? We did some leg work to find you the answers from our source National Leasing.

Here are some quick reasons:

Conserve Cash - Leasing allows you to conserve cash and leverage up the buying power of your operating or capital budgets, thereby overcoming budget limitations. A $30,000 annual equipment budget is leveraged up considerably through leasing

100% Financing - Unlike most traditional financing, in most cases you do not make any down payment on the structure.

No Pre-Payment of Taxes - You pay GST and PST on rentals. You DO NOT prepay the total taxes on the equipment in full up front.

Preserve Lines of Credit - Valuable cash and lines of credit are preserved to grow your business. No one in business experiences financial difficulty because they have too much cash.

Potential Income Tax Benefits - In many instances, leasing provides income tax benefits and the assets do not appear on the balance sheet. Debt to Equity ratios are unaffected.

Pay as You Profit - You establish equipment costs in today's dollars, and pay these costs incrementally in inflated future dollars, as the equipment is used. You can add extra equipment and accessories for very small monthly costs.

Tailored Payments - Repayment can be tailored to your cash flow. Budgeting is simple

Now it's up to you, the options are available to order your SECUR-U video surveillance system, Intercom System solution.  Order NOW! and someone from our sales team will be in touch shortly.
