Why your Home Alarm doesn't work Part 3

Posted by: Billy Eaton Posted Date: 10/02/2012

The system doesn’t work properly

The most common version of this that I see when I visit homes or small businesses is that the motion detector is covered.  When I ask I get a variety of answers from “we got a dog and he will set it off” to “oh we kept getting false alarms from that one, so we just covered it.” Motion detectors are typically used for high traffic or unavoidable areas. The foyer motion should always be working as it job its to cover activity coming in and heading up the stairs to your jewelry, cash, and more importantly your family.

I’ll begin with the dog. Motion detectors have come a long way in the last number of years. Now most have infra red sensors that allow for pet immunity up to 80lbs. If you have a larger dog that exceeds that, you may want to look at ensuring your existing system has ALL perimeter entry points covered. Other solutions to this may be keeping the dog in a portion of the house that isn’t near a motion detector.

Next to the broken motion detector.  I’m going back to the car metaphor on this one. If you found out that your alternator was broken, you can ignore it for a while but eventually your cars battery will leave you stranded because the alternator wasn’t charging the battery properly. Likewise with your motion detector, yes you may avoid some false alarms but that motion serves a purpose in security system and when left in that state of disrepair, you leave yourself vulnerable. A service call will help address these issues quickly and keep your system running properly.

Similarly, if you have done renovations and replaced doors, make sure you have any contacts replaced by a properly trained service technician.

Have you had your residential or commercial security system serviced lately?

The change of season usually signals the need for a tune up on your car but when was the last time you had your security alarm tested and tuned up? In one of my earlier blog posts I touched on the fact that winter can lead to window/door contacts requiring an adjustment to operate properly; the same is true once the cold weather is behind us and warmer temperatures are on the rise. Ensure that when your doors are in the closed/locked position and you push or pull on them the contact remains closed. If you hear your chime being activated you will know that an adjustment is needed to ensure false alarms do not occur.

It is also a good idea to review your call list and be sure that all contact names and phone numbers are current. In the event of an alarm, the monitoring station will call based on the contact list they have on file so to ensure they reach the proper individuals in a timely manner it is important to have up-to-date information on file.

Our technicians can be scheduled to attend your site and do a thorough test on your home or business security alarm system. This will ensure that the central station is receiving all signals from your panel and you can rest assured that your alarm operating properly. If there is a problem they will be able to identify and rectify the issue for you.

To book your service call with a SECUR-U technician or if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Integrate Smoke Detectors into your Security Alarm

Posted by: Doug Penson Posted Date: 03/18/2010

As seen in the March 9 2010 edition of the Milton Champion a very useful video is now available on the internet.

It was released by the Office of the Fire Marshal and encourages families to have a fire escape plan in place. Titled "No Time To Spare", it touches on the extreme importance of maintaining working smoke detectors and installing residential sprinklers. To view this video goto www.milton.ca/fire/prevention.htm.

Another way to further protect your family and home from fire is by integrating smoke detectors into your security alarm system. Whether hardwired or wireless, both options are available and will alert the monitoring station in the event of a fire. When this signal is received the central station will dispatch the fire department immediately. Especially during the night or when no one is home, this would drastically reduce the chances of serious harm being done to your family or home.

For more information on adding smoke detectors to your alarm system or to schedule an installation please contact SECUR-U Inc. We are happy to help you increase the safety of your family.

Wireless Security System

An exciting new product available at SECUR-U - The ALEXOR 2-Way Wireless Suite

Alexor is the centre component of DSC’s 2-Way Wireless Security Suite. It operates as a completely wireless control panel and communicates wirelessly to the other DSC wireless security devices.

Because it is a distributed system, the panel is not attached to the keypad physically, but rather wirelessly. Designed for flexible, secure installation locations within the home, as long as there is access to AC power, Alexor operates via up to four wire-free keypads. DSC’s 2-Way Wireless Security Suite offers wireless and continuously supervised communication between devices. The signals between the 2-way wireless devices and the Alexor Panel are fully encrypted, prohibiting unauthorized interruption of communication between them. If the security system changes its armed state or any of the 2-way devices are tampered with, Alexor will immediately be signaled and the appropriate transmission will be instantly be transmitted to the monitoring station. Alexor offers all the reliability of traditional wired/hybrid control panels but with all the convenience that wireless delivers.

How do I update the time on my security system

Posted by: Doug Penson Posted Date: 11/12/2009

As your local leader in security solutions, Secur-U wants to ensure that your alarm is functioning at full capacity.

With Daylight Savings having just past it’s important that you update the date/time on your system.

You can easily do so by completing the following steps on your DSC alarm. press * 6 and enter the 4 digit master code, one long beep indicates an error,  press # and enter the master code again. After you hear 4 short beeps press 1 for date/time and then 10 digits, 2 each for the hour, minute, month, day, and year. You must use a 24 hr clock and only need to enter the last 2 digits of the year. This information can also be found on our website click here for the link

As with your vehicle it is always a good idea to service your system periodically. Secur-U can schedule a service call to your home or business and replace your battery, update codes and test that your alarm system is communicating properly with the monitoring station. This is all done for a minimal fee, takes only an hour of your time, and will ensure that you are receiving the protection you want.  click here for our contact information.
